Voice Calculator FAQ

Every question we've ever been asked about Voice Calculator, answered in plain language. If your question isn't here, email us and we'll add it.

Pricing & availability

Is Voice Calculator free?
Voice Calculator is available on the iOS App Store. Pricing and any premium features are shown at the time of download, and all purchases are handled through Apple. We don't charge any subscription for the core app features needed to calculate by voice.
What iPhones and iPads is Voice Calculator compatible with?
Voice Calculator supports recent versions of iOS and iPadOS. Check the App Store listing for the exact minimum version. It's optimized for iPhone but runs full-screen on iPad as well.
Does the app work on Apple Watch or Mac?
Voice Calculator is currently an iPhone and iPad app. There's no Apple Watch or dedicated Mac version at this time.

Privacy & data

Does Voice Calculator record my voice?
No. We never store your voice recordings or the text transcripts. Audio is processed by Apple's Speech Recognition engine — on-device whenever possible — and the transcribed numbers are used only to build your current calculation. See our full privacy policy.
Where is my calculation history stored?
Entirely on your device. Your history, settings, theme, decimal preferences, and tax rate are all kept in local storage. They never leave your phone unless you explicitly export them.
Why does Voice Calculator need microphone permission?
Because it's a voice-powered calculator. Without microphone access, the voice input part of the app cannot work. You can revoke permission anytime in iOS Settings and the app will simply stop listening.

Using the app

Does Voice Calculator work offline?
The app itself works offline. Speech recognition uses Apple's Speech framework, which runs on-device on supported iPhones and iPads. For older devices or certain languages, Apple may route some recognition through its servers; in that case an internet connection is needed.
How do I set my tax rate?
Open Settings inside the app, tap Tax Rate, and enter your local sales tax percentage (for example, 8.25 for 8.25%). After that, saying "plus tax" applies it automatically. We wrote a full guide on tax by voice if you want the details.
What's the difference between Basic and Scientific mode?
Basic mode follows left-to-right calculation (1 + 2 × 3 = 9), matching the way most people do mental math. Scientific mode respects standard order of operations (1 + 2 × 3 = 7), matching what you'd get on a scientific calculator or in math class.
Can I export my calculation history?
Yes. Tap the share icon to export your current session or full history as CSV (for Excel or Google Sheets) or as plain text (for notes, messages, or email).
Can I undo a mistake?
Yes. Say "undo" or "back" to reverse the last step. You can also say "delete" to remove the last entry or "clear" to reset the current calculation entirely.

Voice recognition

How accurate is voice recognition for numbers?
Very accurate in quiet conditions, typically above 95% for clearly spoken numbers. Accuracy drops with background noise, accents the Apple engine isn't trained well on, or very long continuous numbers. The "read" command lets you verify the full calculation by ear before trusting it.
Can I use Voice Calculator with AirPods or a Bluetooth headset?
Yes. Because the app uses the standard iOS audio input, any microphone your iPhone accepts — including AirPods and Bluetooth headsets — will work. AirPods often improve accuracy in noisy environments.
What languages does Voice Calculator support?
Voice Calculator uses the speech recognition language currently configured in your iOS Keyboard / Speech settings. Numbers are universal; voice commands like "plus", "minus", "tax", "clear", "undo" are currently optimized for English. More language support is planned.
What if Voice Calculator mishears me?
Three options: say "undo" to remove the last misheard step, say "read" to play back the whole calculation and confirm what the app actually heard, or say "clear" to start fresh. Speaking clearly and in short chunks (for example, "thirty five thousand" instead of "three five zero zero zero") significantly improves accuracy.

Accessibility

Does Voice Calculator work with VoiceOver?
Yes. Voice Calculator is designed with accessibility in mind. All buttons are labeled for VoiceOver, the "read" function speaks your calculation aloud, and Dynamic Type is respected for users who need larger text.
